Yellow Headed Blackbird Pearching
This Yellow Headed Blackbird joined its fellow noise makers and squawked and squawked as I drove next to them near the Logan Airport near Logan, UT. These birds seem to have no fear of humans and are easy to approach.
Double-crested Cormorant
While quietly sneaking through through 15 foot reeds in the marshes at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, I spotted what looked like a stump only about 20 feet from me on the other side of the reeds. I froze and quickly pulled my camera to my eye ready to shoot. To my great surprise the 3-foot stump turned its head to reveal and eye and a beak. I had come face to face with a mature elusive Double-crested Cormorant, whom after a couple of shutter clicks abruptly took flight.
Great Blue Heron
This Great Blue Heron flew over my head at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Its flight was slow, methodical and awe striking. Some how its aerial prowess and body form reminded me of an pre-historic pterodactyl.
The Overseer
This American White Pelican flew over me at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Its keen eye and circling flight patterns made me feel like I was being watched, as if it was the great overseer.
Paired Off
This pair of Clarkâs Grebes cruised through the marsh at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. They were fun to watch as they seemed to enjoy being with each other. In this photo they appeared to be having a nice conversation as they paddled down the channel.
Four Geese on a Stroll
While driving the auto tour at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge I encountered two couples of Canadian Geese. They were strolling down the road ahead of us. Not long after this photo was snapped, they abruptly took flight.
Morning Yawn
While shooting photos at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, I observed an interesting behavior. This American White Pelican decided to take a big yawn. The size of its beak was striking.
Sandhill Crane Staring
These Sandhill Cranes populate the corn fields near the Cutler Reservoir near Logan, UT in early April 2016. They were very wary and kept a watchful eye on me. These birds are difficult to get close to.
Pelicans at Sundown
These American White Pelicans strolled through the evening sunset on the Bear River near Logan, UT in April 2016. The sunset dramatically lit the water to make the water appear as liquid gold.
Off Season
These ducks took flight ahead of me as I moved through the reeds at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in April 2016. The Wasatch mountain range filled the background and cattails carpeted the valley floor.
American Avocet Landing
At the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in early April 2016, this American Avocet let me get fairly close while landing near a flock of other American Avocets. The black and white patterns on their back and wings was surprisingly geometric in appearance.
Pelican Nap Time
It was about 9am at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and these American White Pelicans must have had their breakfast already. They were happily taking a group nap all curled up in balls. The one on the right broke the mold and felt like preening its feathers.
Yellow Headed Blackbird Watching the Sunset
This Yellow Headed Blackbird seemed peaceful watching the setting sun near the Logan Utah Airport in April 2016. These were very fluttery birds, couldn't seem to hold still, and were constantly squawking that day. I happened to capture this one during a very brief peaceful moment.
